After reading this I think I will get on and build that list, I’ve been busy with other things but do realise the need for this. I also have brand related social media accounts and work at building these up also. This does take time but I know it’s worth it, I made a couple of sales in the first month with my site using social media sharing.
Indeed, Amazon has really made a lot of people rich via their popular affiliate program, but as you rightly said, it also comes with a lot of limitations. I generally love and agree with the idea of having different monetization strategies instead of focusing only on Amazon, in case something goes wrong.
So, I have an iPhone 8. I do not have my own computer, however I do have access to libraries of course so I could use a library computer if that’s is the best option. Can affiliate marketing be accomplished on a phone? Until a personal computer is acquired?
You’re right, Javier – the Smart Blogger audience is mostly beginning and intermediate bloggers and online businesses. The merchant side is more of an advanced topic. But good suggestion. Maybe they’ll address the merchant side in the future.
Your audience’s trust. This cannot be overstated. Affiliate marketing is all about trust. When someone you trust recommends a product, you listen. Not so much when a stranger does. (In fact, if you’re like me, it often makes you skeptical.)
I am currently promoting Shopify but I have never heard about Ashop. Other affiliate programs you mentioned arequite great, but I expected to see Cybercon and Lunarpages in the web hosting categories. Like you rightly said, there is room for improvement.
The easiest and most common way to start building an audience for a website is via social media. Depending on your niche and industry, you can choose from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and several other niche and location-specific networks. Building up an engaged and interested following on social media is a great opportunity to build relationships and once you have their trust, promote your products and services to them.

Affiliate networks that already have several advertisers typically also have a large pool of publishers. These publishers could be potentially recruited, and there is also an increased chance that publishers in the network apply to the program on their own, without the need for recruitment efforts by the advertiser.
Mark, WordPress isn’t just for blogging. You can build a static site using WordPress and have your blog integrated so users just need to click on a tab to see your latest posts. That works better than setting up a redirect or sending them to another site or having to cobble something together yourself. There are tons of additional plug-ins for WordPress to enhance its features and capabilities.
If you’re not new to affiliate marketing, and especially if you’re already using Amazon’s program, this book probably won’t offer you much. I’ve been working with Amazon for a few years and I came away from this with only a few nuggets of useful information that I wasn’t already aware of.
Lots of choice. Affiliate programs abound. It’s rare to come across a product without an affiliate program attached. I would bet, right this minute, you are surrounded with several products you use and love. You could easily make money from them as an affiliate.
I do not recommend using social media for your main platform. Why not social media? It’s risky because you don’t control YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and other social media sites — they do. And they can change the rules at any time.
In my experience, it’s product-related blogs that tend to do best with Amazon. Most blogs probably have at least some possibilities (for example here on ProBlogger I occasionally link to a book that relates or a computer or electronic tool that I think might be useful to bloggers) but the reality is that this blog will never convert as well on Amazon as my photography site.
