Commission rates vary widely depending on the affiliate program. Amazon Associates, for example, pays a tiny percentage of sales (just a few percent). Some affiliate programs (digital products especially) often pay close to 50%.
Technically no, although in my opinion, it’s the most convenient vehicle for affiliate marketing. Why? Because it’s a perfect spot to keep all your content and it’s not subject to the whims of social media algorithms. Plus, it’s available 24/7 so anyone can find it at any time.
What I realized with working from home and making money online is that the more people you genuinely help, the more money you end up making. Helping others to succeed will create you a large following of loyal customers. Do you need some extra cash in your pocket to pay the bills, or save up for Christmas? A little extra income to buffer your savings? How about setting up a full-time business at home? Earning an income online using affiliate marketing is a perfect way to do all these things, without spending huge amounts of time or money doing it.
Many other major brands that use affiliate marketing take a similar approach and let one of the big networks do the heavy lifting for them: see DirecTV (CJ), Best Buy (LinkShare), and Overstock (LinkShare).
When Jon sent out his survey months ago, this is something I requested. Wow! This is wonderful and I’m going to go brew of cup of tea, get a biscuit or two, my favorite pen and a pad, and go through it again!
Many merchants will still give credit for this sale to the affiliate, even though the visitor came directly to the site and not through an affiliate link when they completed their purchase. This is a fair solution in many cases, since many customers take time to make a decision and commit to a purchase. In the scenario above, the affiliate still provided a valuable service to the merchant–getting the customer to their site–and deserves to be compensated for that.
With the emergence of search engines in the mid-1990’s, the internet ballooned into a massive e-commerce and information machine. Website owners were creating valuable content and providing tremendous benefits to their visitors, and these website owners wanted to be compensated for their hard work. Early forms of online advertising like CPM or fixed placement started seeing competition from emerging, more accountable forms of online advertising, like affiliate marketing. So, what is affiliate marketing?
Utilize Google. Entering “‘Competitor name’ + ‘affiliate program’”  into your browser’s search bar will typically bring up the competitor’s affiliate page, which could list their current commission rates.
In this video, I explain why Amazon Affiliate Marketing is best for beginners, and how to get into the industry. The reason why I love this program so much is because it has much lower competition overall, and you don’t have to “sell” people on things. Amazon’s powerhouse strategy does all the lifting for you. I also reveal some tips you can use to increase your conversion rates with your affiliate websites.
Since 2012 I have placed less emphasis on Amazon so things have dropped off a little but I’m still tracking in the range of $50,000 to $60,000 per year from Amazon and overall I estimate my Amazon earnings, since 2003, are around the $660,000 mark (USD). Note: this figure was updated in September 2017.
For the purposes of full disclosure, I downloaded this book while it was being offered one day, free. It’s a great book for a beginner to affiliate marketing and it would also be useful to someone who may have worked with another affiliate program but not with Amazon’s. The book lays out the basics of the Amazon program, finding a niche, building a website, loading it with Amazon affiliate products and a few ways to feature them on the site as well as some basic ways to promote them/your site. If you’re starting from “zero” or if you have a blog but you don’t know how to monetize it, this book will help.
You don’t necessarily have to have a huge site or lots of traffic. Consider emailing an affiliate program’s contact person (look for contact info on the site or in affiliate newsletters) if you send a lot of leads their way, rank well in the search engines for a related keyword or have a high conversion rate. Make your email compelling. Read my tips here. You just have to be a good fit and provide excellent value to the merchant. Another good resource for this is here.
When visitors clicked on the associate’s website to go to Amazon and purchase a book, the associate received a commission. Amazon was not the first merchant to offer an affiliate program, but its program was the first to become widely known and serve as a model for subsequent programs.[12][13]
You know your readership best so tune in to where they’re at and whether you’ve posted too much on the same product. You don’t want to over do it but if it’s a product your readers are discussing and are interested in there’s plenty of ways to bring it up (and promote it on Amazon) more than once.
To sum it all up, making your first affiliate commission requires a bit of work but if you break it all down and follow it step by step, it won’t seem so overwhelming at all. Here’s a quick recap of what you need to do:
Mistake #5: Promoting a lot of affiliate products instead of just a few. Once you start affiliate marketing, you realize how easy it is to share affiliate links. Instead of becoming an affiliate for a lot of different products and sharing them liberally, I recommend concentrating on just a few and sharing them intentionally. It doesn’t seem as spammy, plus you can be sure the products you do promote are closely aligned with your brand and message. Deep is better than wide.
Wow! This is a great article, thank you for sharing! You have provided us with so many great tips and such a great amount of information on affiliate marketing, it is a great resource for those who are completely overwhelmed with all the different parts of the industry.
I guess there would come a point where too much promotion would get a negative reaction so you want to be a little subtle about your promotion but in general, I think readers can handle more than we might think they can.
If your expectations are such that you are delighted with an extra $100/day, then fuck anybody who tells you to throw down $10,000 on a costly media buy. POF is a brilliant low-level traffic source (with a few Intermediate exceptions who rely on economies of scope) and you need never risk your coat.
There are a number of merchants who work directly with affiliates; but most affiliate marketers will make use of a network to find and implement offers on their sites. Though networks take a cut of fees generated and therefore reduce the overall amount paid, they do serve some valuable purposes in the affiliate marketing ecosystem:
Know when to wait. Some affiliate programs require a certain level of traffic, subscribers, etc. If that’s the case, I say it’s better to wait to apply for that program instead of applying and hoping for the best. You risk being labelled the person who can’t follow guidelines and you might also risk not be allowed into the program when you do meet the qualifications.
To understand the potential value in establishing direct relationships with merchants, a quick refresher course on the economics of affiliate marketing may be useful. We like this visual as a way to summarize:
Formerly Commission Junction, CJ Affiliate by Conversant reaches millions of consumers shopping online through their affiliate marketing network. The Conversant, Inc. companies include Commission Junction, Dotomi, Greystripe, Mediaplex, and ValueClick Media.
You don’t want to promote things unrelated to the content your audience is used to getting from you. It’s jarring and can decrease their trust in you. And without trust, your affiliate income will dry up.
The easiest way is to go through our training modules and lessons. We cover everything you need to know, from how to do the keyword research to marketing techniques to increase traffic and grow your audience. You can find those lessons here: http://www.affilorama.com/lessons
Very well written! Thanks for sharing these tips. Something as simple as adding your affiliate link to images is one I’ve overlooked sometimes lol. What has worked the best for me is adding bonuses to the affiliate offer.
Always disclose. You must let your readers know when you are using affiliate links. Read my post, Are You Disclosing Properly? for more. An image disclosure or general disclosure at the bottom of your site is not sufficient.

Affiliate Marketing Secrets
The main reason for this is that readers who connect with you on a daily basis, over the long haul, begin to trust you (and your blog). When you make a recommendation, or do a review, they’re more likely to take that advice that someone who has give arrived from a search engine link.
People buy more than one item at a time – when you send someone to Amazon you earn a commission on whatever they buy, whether they end up buying what you sent them to or not. Many people load up their cart with numerous items so commissions can add up.
It can feel overwhelming to do all the necessary work involved in setting up your site and building your reputation. But trust me, once you’ve made that first sale, all the hard work will be worth it!
While I do get a fair bit of search engine traffic, I’ve found that in most cases (and there is an exception below) search visitors don’t sign up to the affiliate programs on my blogs. Loyal and repeat readers do.
You will vastly improve your chances of making a good income as an affiliate marketer if you use as many available communication vehicles as possible. Email is one of the most effective communication vehicles there is. Even more so than your blog or website.
All of these sites last for a few months or a few years at best (this is so rare!) before they get hit by a Google penalty, stop ranking, or get abandoned because they aren’t making enough money to be worth continuing with.
I am so very glad I found this website and read this post. I am so inexperienced in all this, but I do see that you take a totally different approach to the many others I have read. It is so refreshing. I will go back reread, study and apply.
It really depends on your niche and your readers. I’ve learned the most by watching others in my niche and seeing what they seem to promote frequently. For me personally (and from what I’ve heard others say), creating your own product is so much better than most affiliate marketing.
Start by asking for recommendations from people you trust. Spy on your favorite influencers’ sites to see what they have to offer. Check each product’s social proof and testimonials and see if they pass the Good Affiliate Product checklist above.
The dark web is notorious for its nefarious listings. Drugs, guns, weapons, and terrorism tend to dominate discussions about the dark web. However, the dark web (as people tend to think about it) is mostly legal. That doesn’t mean, though, that it’s safe. This report explores an area of content seldom discussed outside of dark web criminal circles: fraud guides. These guides are widely … Continue Reading…
An Intermediate affiliate may drop a level after losing his best campaign, while the Affiliate Apprentice can turn Top Doggy Baller overnight if he stumbles in to an unsaturated niche and makes it pay (a daily occurrence in 2009, rare in 2013).
Set up a website. Professional or business websites can also use the Affiliate program. However, they are best used with people who do not sell similar products on their website, since Amazon’s marketplace can drive business away. If you have a website promoting different products, a club, a non-profit or a service, then you can recommend quality products on your site and make money doing it.
Lots of choice. Affiliate programs abound. It’s rare to come across a product without an affiliate program attached. I would bet, right this minute, you are surrounded with several products you use and love. You could easily make money from them as an affiliate.
I’m a RevGlue.com affiliate. I have to admit, I hardly make anything from affiliate marketing off of my blog directly. I do expect this to go up over time, especially as my organic rankings increase (search engine traffic only accounts for about 1/3 of my visits) as my old review posts don’t get much traffic on their own.
Affiliate marketing has grown quickly since its inception. The e-commerce website, viewed as a marketing toy in the early days of the Internet, became an integrated part of the overall business plan and in some cases grew to a bigger business than the existing offline business. According to one report, the total sales amount generated through affiliate networks in 2006 was £2.16 billion in the United Kingdom alone. The estimates were £1.35 billion in sales in 2005.[15] MarketingSherpa’s research team estimated that, in 2006, affiliates worldwide earned US$6.5 billion in bounty and commissions from a variety of sources in retail, personal finance, gaming and gambling, travel, telecom, education, publishing, and forms of lead generation other than contextual advertising programs.[16]
It’s important to make the most of your marketing efforts and finding the right placements for the right programs is essential. Our knowledgeable Account Representatives coordinate with each affiliate to create a specialized marketing plan for their platforms. By utilizing our tracking options and learning where programs are performing best, you can concentrate your marketing efforts to optimize your time and increase your profitability.
For example, the content on Super Weddings is useful whether you’re organizing a wedding today or next year. All the content on the site is created accordingly. To make things easier for the audience, it is separated into categories to make it very convenient for the reader to find what they’re looking for. This, of course, is also very good for SEO.
If you have built up an email list, you could also promote your affiliate offers via email promotions. Just make sure you build up a relationship with your audience first instead of going for the hard sell straightaway. The emails you send out must contain your affiliate links to products so when your audience click through. the sale is attributed to you.
Especially, for a newbie online. It would be much easier for someone to succeed with something they are very passionate about. And in today’s world, and with the help of technology, anybody can start an online business in a niche. Of course, it takes time and effort but it can be done. There is no doubt about it.
Thanks for the tips! I think it is very easy to side track these days with so much marketing noise about Affiliate Marketing especially if there’s too much focus on selling the product instead of promoting a second opinion or solid content.
